The Ayurvedic Morning Routine – Dinacharya

The Ayurvedic Morning Routine – Dinacharya

Jun 8, 2020

Whilst morning routines might be all the rave with personal development giants such as Tony Robbins, Robin Sharma and just about every successful person out there –  this ritual actually originated over 5000 years ago in India in the original system of medicine known as Ayurveda. For those new to Ayurveda, ‘Ayur’ means life and ‘veda’ means knowledge. Essentially Ayurveda is the knowledge of life – it is vast and takes into account every single aspect of you as a being – right down to the most suitable type of profession, exercise, meditation practice, food and most importantly lifestyle for you. No two people are the same and hence there is no one size fits all.  There are however a few common ‘best practices’ that will benefit anyone that chooses to incorporate them into their life.

Does this involve drinking two litres of water, going for a run and meditating all before 6:00am? Well, not exactly…

The purpose of the Ayurvedic daily routine (aka Dinacharya) is essentially to bring balance to the human system. When there is balance, your body is at ease. When you are at ease you are free of dis-ease. Pretty simple stuff, right?

So, if you’re wondering what an ayurvedic morning routine looks like, you’re in luck. Below are 7 Simple Steps to get you on your way.

    1. Rise Early

Ideally it is best to wake up before sunrise. There is something rather magical that happens in the wee hours of the morning. If you need some inspiration getting out of bed, read this post and Rumi’s beautiful poem below to get clear on your why.

“The breezes at dawn have secrets to tell you
    Don’t go back to sleep!
You must ask for what you really want.
    Don’t go back to sleep!
People are going back and forth
across the doorsill where the two worlds touch,
The door is round and open
    Don’t go back to sleep!”

    Rumi

    2. Start Right

Upon rising, take at least 30 seconds to set and cultivate positive intentions for the day ahead. This could entail something like:

Practicing Gratitude: Simply think of three things in your life that you are grateful for and really cultivate the feeling in your body.

Positive Affirmations: These can be any short statement that resonates with you. If you need some inspiration with affirmations, Louise Hay has your back with these infographics and list of 101 affirmations.

Mantra/Prayer: Mantras are potent sattvic sounds arranged in a specific way that impacts your system by rearranging your molecular structure to enhance your consciousness. A common mantra to play is the Gayatri Mantra, however if you choose to chat yourself, the proper pronunciation of mantras is very important. Find out why here.

    3. Self Care

From an Ayurvedic perspective, this is essentially about eliminating toxins (amas) from the body which tend to build up overnight. How do we do this?

Evacuate the bowels and bladder: Consuming warm lemon water with honey will help stimulate digestion. If you need a little more help add half a teaspoon of Triphala (an ayurvedic herb).

Tongue Scraping: This is to get rid of the white coating (toxins) which has built up on the tongue overnight. Using a copper tongue scraper is best.

Dry Brushing: This stimulates the lymphatic system and should be done in an upward motion with a natural bristle brush. You can learn more here.

    4. Self-Oil Massage/Abhyanga

Ok, admittedly I am very guilty of thinking a self-oil massage is extremely indulgent and quite frankly who on earth has time to do this on a daily basis? Well, my tune has since changed. Yes, this is lovely expression of self love but its benefits go far beyond that and this practice should be especially important for those suffering from anxiety. It is best to use cold pressed black seed sesame oil (do note this is very different to the sesame cooking oil commonly used in asian cooking) and the oil should be warmed sightly before application.

To really understand WHY abhyanga is especially important what this video.

To learn HOW to give yourself an abhyanga massage watch this video.

    5. Yoga Practice

Postures (Asana): Practicing some simple Upa Yoga movements are a wonderful way to wake the body up, promote healthy joints and prepare the energy system. If you are familiar with sun salutations (surya shakti, surya namaskar or surya kriya), 12 cycles followed by savasana will be more than sufficient as sun salutations work on every single system of the body.

Breathing practices (Pranayama): Depending on your constitution, your ayurvedic practitioner will prescribe an appropriate pranayama. However, a pranayama that suits just about everyone out there is nadi shuddhi or nadi shodhana.

Concentration & Meditation (Dharana/ Dyana): Most people don’t realise that concentration and meditation practices are part of yoga. They are in fact two of the 8 limbs of ashtanga yoga. We practice concentration so we can fall into meditation and be meditative. A simple practice would be to observe the natural breath for 15-20 minutes. Learn more here.

    6. Breakfast

It is said even if you are not hungry it is important to have something small in the morning. Opt for warm cooked foods as it is easier on digestion and cold foods such as smoothies will dampen your digestive fire (angi). You can find some recipie inspiration here.

    7. Plan your day for success

Let’s face it, you don’t want the day to happen to you, where you are in a mode of reaction to other people’s demands and needs. They are usually hiding in your inbox, messages and socials. Give yourself the gift and stay off socials/email/technology until after you have filled up your cup and planned your day – even if it is having the day off. This cultivates more conscious decision making that flows through the day and will keep moving you towards your goals.

    Final Thoughts…

Ok, take a breath, or three. This might sound like a lot initially, so don’t fret if you can’t do everything. The key is to gradually work towards this. If all you can do is drink warm lemon water in the morning, so be it. It is far more important to do one thing consistently every day rather than trying to do everything, failing and giving up. Be kind. Honour yourself. Accept where you are and keep moving slowly in the right direction and this will become as second nature as brushing your teeth.

    Aromatherapy 101

    Aromatherapy 101

    Feb 21, 2018

Aromatherapy is definitely making a comeback from the days of Cleopatra, Tutankhamun and Hypocrites. This not so recent phenomenon has been used for over 6000 years for therapeutic purposes by the Indians, Chinese, Greeks, Romans and Egyptians to treat a variety of health-related conditions. Once more prized than gold, essential oils have over 200 biblical references!  – So what’s all the hype and what is aromatherapy?

“Aromatherapy is the art and science of utilising naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonise and promote the health of body, mind and spirit”

In essence (pun intended), essential oils represent natures pharmacy. There are oils that destroy viruses and pathogenic bacteria, are anti-microbial, high in antioxidants, support mood, depression and anxiety, regulate hormones, reduce inflammation and even kill pancreatic cancer cells (check out the peer-reviewed journal article here)

You may be asking yourself why haven’t we been using essential oils in Western Medicine? Well, the short of it is, western medicine is heavily based on pharmacology; and the pharmaceutical industry makes a TON of money from patenting their synthetic manufactured drugs. Since is not possible to patent an unmodified plant (non-GMO), pharmaceutical companies are more inclined to synthetically create drugs in which they can patent in order to maximise profits. Sadly, it’s just economics…

So, if you’re new to essential oils and want to use them after reading this be sure to get your hands on some high-quality oils. Some oils have the name ‘therapeutic grade’ and claim to be safe for ingestion while others are just as pure without the term ‘therapeutic grade’ because of crippling insurance costs. Whichever option you choose, just be sure it is a high-quality pure oil. Do note that most oils sold in retail stores are not 100% pure as per the labelling so research wisely. Personally, I use and love DoTERRA oils and also buy some of my oils from N-essentials and Mountain Rose. Young Living is another essential oil company that has great quality oils.

    Why use essential oils?

    • Potency – For example: 15ml Lavander = 68kg Lavander flowers
    • Fast Absorption – It’s a liquid and will be absorbed into the bloodstream FASTER
    • Kills Bacteria – Some essential oils destroy viruses and pathogenic bacteria, are anti-microbial, are high in antioxidants, support mood, anxiety, hormones, reduces inflammation and studies have show that certain oils include pancreatic cancer cell death and a whole lot more! (Some clinics and hospitals around the world are now diffusing oils)
    • Natural – Essential Oils come from nature and hence are 100% natural.
    • Proven Effective  – Essential oils have been effectively used for thousands of years and its comeback is empowering a whole lot of people to take control of their health.

Four ways to use essential oils?

    1. Aromatically

Probably the most well know way to use essential oils.

    • Cold Steam Diffusers – Using a cold steam diffuser means you get the full benefits of your essential oils as heating alters the structure of the oil, meaning you don’t get the oil’s full benefit. So always opt for a cold steam diffuser over those
    • Diffuser Jewellery – There is a tonne of jewellery out there using lava beads. You simply apply your favourite oil onto the bead and wear your jewellery.

    2. Topically

Personally, this is my absolute favourite way of using essential oils.

    • Reflexology chart – I massaging the oil onto the soles of my feet in accordance with the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) reflexology chart when I feel something is not quite right. This is one of the most effective ways to get the full benefit of your oils.
    • Massage – Mix your essential oils with a carrier oil like coconut oil or sweet almond oil for therapeutic massage. Applying your oil directly onto the skin is a highly effective way to get the oil directly into your bloodstream.
    • Body Sprays – Mixing a few drops of your favourite oils with distilled water is a super easy way to make a refreshing mist spray or perfume.
    • Rollers – Mixing a few drops of your desired oils in a roller bottle with a carrier oil is handy for all kinds of things like headaches, mosquito bites, cramping or simply a natural perfume.
    • Cosmetics – If you are a bit like me and transitioning towards using 100% natural toxic-free cosmetics, you can add any combination of essential oils to your homemade body butter, toothpaste, cleansers and a whole lot more.
    • Mouth Wash – Instead of using highly toxic mouthwashes, use the Ayurvedic practice of oil pulling – swishing coconut or sesame oil for 10-15 minutes then spit (do NOT swallow, it is highly toxic). To make it more potent add a combination of 4 essential oils (oregano, frankincense, tee tree, lemon)

    3. Take Internally

Ingesting essential oils is most definitely a controversial topic so,  speak to an expert to find out if it’s appropriate for you. Please remember therapeutic grade essential oils are 100% pure oils that have not been diluted, they are medicinal by nature. Citrus oils are the safest and below are some of the ways to ingest them if that’s what you choose.

    • Cooking – Add oils such as lemon to your salad dressings, lemongrass to Thai curries, orange/peppermint to homemade chocolate – OMG!!! (I will post this chocolate recipe soon…promise) and rose to raw cheesecakes (a staple in my household).
    • Drinks – Add a drop of your favourite oil to jazz up sparkling water for a refreshing beverage minus the sugar.
    • Vege Capsules – The idea being that you fill a capsule with the oils that are most beneficial to you. DoTERRA also sells beadlets (tiny beads filled with oil) for convenience.

    4. Household and Cleaning Products

Make your own toxic-free cleaners that smell much nicer than just white -vinegar.

    • Multi-Purpose Surface Sprays
      • Peppermint and Clove are brilliant for keeping critters at bay.
    • Bathroom Sprays
      • Lemon, Wild Orange and On-guard are my favs.
    • Bug and Insect Sprays
      • Peppermint and Eucalyptus come to mind, however, I get eaten alive so this one is in developmental stages and I’m open to suggestions for toxic free solutions, get in touch.
    • After Sun Spray
      • The best thing to do here is to fillet an aloe vera leaf and rub all over your skin.leave for 5 mins before rinsing off.
      • Mixing lavender, peppermint (natural analgesic) and coconut oil together with the aloe vera is a great after sun care – if you try it, weigh in below!

Frankincense: When in doubt of which oil, use Frank – it was good enough for Jesus! Seriously, this oil is the single must have oil in your collection. Studies have shown that Frankincense from hydrodistillation of Boswellia sacra gum resin induces human pancreatic cell death – pretty powerful stuff.

Lemon: Use for a sore throat, it’s also a natural detoxifier of the liver and gallbladder and promotes weight loss.

Lavander: Calming, relieves anxiety, hormonal support, great for healing cuts and burns.

Tea Tree (Melaleuca): Acne and skin support, effective antimicrobial oil, effective for treating mould and fungus.

Peppermint: Relieves IBS, improves focus and energy, natural breath freshener, relieves allergies and sinus problems

Oregano: Immune support, great for colds (be sure to dilute oregano, it’s seriously potent and it will burn!)

    Grounding 101: The Beginners Guide

    Grounding 101: The Beginners Guide

    Feb 14, 2018

We’ve all heard someone say ‘I feel so ungrounded.’ Well, science is now showing that there could be a whole lot of truth to that statement and it could be affecting your health. Unfortunately, our modern lifestyle whilst fantastic as making life convenient for us tends to keep us well insulated from our connection to the earth. We spend most of our day in insulated footwear with rubber soles that keep us separate from the earth. So, what is grounding and why should we care about connecting to the earth so much?

    What is ‘Grounding’?

Grounding also known as ‘Earthing’ is essentially the practice of connecting the body with the earth. Meaning, direct skin contact with grass, sand, rivers, rock, snow or any conductive material.

The concept was initially developed by Clint Ober, a retired TV executive who began studying grounding in an effort to heal himself. Ober noticed that interference from the signal was eliminated when cables were “grounded” to the earth.

    Why Grounding?

When we are disconnected from the earth, we carry a positive voltage relative to the earth (commonly called free-radicals). Free-radicals play an important role in the body by attacking and destroying unwanted things like viruses and bacteria. However, too many free-radicals cause low-grade inflammation which is believed to be the cause of chronic pain and disease.

Grounding balances this positive voltage back to zero by transferring negatively charged electrons from the earth into the body. It is believed having a zero voltage promotes health and vitality.

“In simple terms, what Earthing does, is literally it squelches the fires of inflammation, and if inflammation is the source of all root illnesses, including Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, heart disease, diabetes — I mean the list goes on and on — if you can impact inflammation and … stop it, we’re going to be healthier beings.” – Dr Sinatra

Whilst grounding may seem deceptively simple, countless people (including myself) are benefiting from this practice and the scientific literature (peer-reviewed studies) to support its claims is growing.

    Benefits of Grounding

    How to Ground?

    Outdoors

Obviously the best and cheapest way to get stay grounded is walking barefoot outside on some grass, sand, a rock or go for a swim in the ocean or a beach walk, that salty ocean water is highly conductive plus you get the added benefit of fresh air (oxygen) and sunshine (Vitamin D).

Unfortunately, most of our shoes have rubber, plastic or synthetic soles which insulate us from the earth so, if you don’t want to go barefoot get a pair of leather sole shoes or grounded footwear.

    Indoors

If it’s not possible to spend time outdoors, there are solutions at every electrical socket (plug into the ground).

An earthing mat is a convenient way to stay grounded all day by simply placing it under your arms or feet while you’re on the computer reducing the electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) you’re exposed to. Typically made from a conductive material such as carbon and retails for around $75

An earthing undersheet is a sure fire way to make a massive difference, guaranteed 6-8 hours grounding every night. Typically made from silver and prices range from $300 – $500

I bought my earthing mat and undersheet from HERE and cannot recommend them enough! My earthing mat and under sheet arrived before Christmas (which I wasn’t expecting), they were beautifully presented and are great quality products. Plus, the owner-operators Peter and Corrina are, lovely and genuinely care about you! The only drawback is that they don’t ship outside Australia.

    Beginners Guide to Kombucha

    Beginners Guide to Kombucha

    Jun 12, 2017

    What is Kombucha?

Kombucha is a slightly sweet fermented tea loaded with probiotics. It is made from green and/or black tea, sugar and a SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast). It originated in China back in 221BC during the Tsin Dynasty and was known as the ‘tea of immortality’. Today kombucha is consumed as a health beverage all around the globe for it’s numerous health benefits. ‘Research conducted in Russia at the beginning of the century and testimony indicate that Kombucha can improve resistance against cancer, prevent cardiovascular diseases, promote digestive functions, stimulate the immune system, reduce inflammatory problems, and can have many other benefits’.

I first encountered this ancient brew several years ago whilst on a yoga retreat Koh Phangan, Thailand. I spent the month practising yoga and pranayama, learning yoga philosophy, detoxing, chanting, having herbal steams and of course drinking yogic “beer” aka kombucha. Little did I know about all the amazing health benefits associated with this brew…

    Why Drink Kombucha?

    1. Promotes Healthy Digestion:

This natural living probiotic beverage increases the number of beneficial bacteria in the gut which in turn improves digestion, fights candida and maintains overall gut health. Studies have also shown that kombucha can prevent/heal stomach ulcers and leaky gut. One of the keys to good health is having a healthy gut. When your digestive system is functioning optimally you reduce your overall toxicity; increase the rate in which nutrients are absorbed, and you free up energy expenditure that would otherwise be spent on digestion.

    2. Detoxifies the Body:

Kombucha contains many of the enzymes and bacteria that your body naturally produces and uses to detoxify the body. Consuming these enzymes and bacteria through natural ferments (like kombucha, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi) reduces the pancreatic load, which in turn eases the burden on the liver. Research has also shown that kombucha can counteract liver cell toxicity, meaning healthy cells in spite of the oxidative stress.

    3. Healthy Joints

Drink your joints to health! Say whatttt? Yup, the tea of immortality is loaded with glucosamines which increase synovial hyaluronic acid production. This increase in synovial hyaluronic acid results in collagen preservation for not only your joints but the entire body. Meaning, healthy pain-free joints and collagen rich plump skin!

    4. Boosts your Immunity

This tea is also high in antioxidants and vitamin C. Our immune system will be jumping for joy as the antioxidants protect our cells from oxidative stress and the vitamin C enhances our bodies ability to ward off infection, heal wounds, and so much more. I mean, a diffiencicy in vitamin C means scurvy and mass doses of vitamin C is a powerful anti-cancer protocol!

    How to Make Kombucha?

After learning about all the benefits of kombucha, I just had to make it! I heard it was easy to make (which it is) but still didn’t really know where/how to start. So for me buying a starter kit was the perfect option as a newbie, however, it isn’t essential to start brewing your very own kombucha.

    Equipment & Ingredients:
1x 5L jar with muslin cloth
1x SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast)
    3x Green tea bags
    3x Black tea bags
    1Cup of rapudura sugar
    1L of boiled filtered water

    Method:
    1. Dissolve rapudura sugar with 1L of boiled filtered water
    2. Add green and black tea bags to the sweet water
    3. Once cooled, pour into 5L jar with SCOBY and starter tea (or some tea from the last batch)
    4. Top up jar with filtered water and cover with muslin cloth
    5. Place jar in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight for 14 DAYS
    6. Enjoy your tea.

I bought my starter kit from HERE. When I bought the kit I was worried about how I was going to get the tea out of the jar. Worry not – it comes with a neat pouring lid making it super easy HOORAY!! (Note: I recently bought another kit and upon sterilising the jar, the bottom fell out – contacted the suppliers with no response…dissapointed!)

The Big Book of Kombucha, I am told is awesome! It is probably one of the most recommended books on kombucha brewing around and perfect if your ready to get fancy and infuse your second ferment.

    Word of Caution

    • Be sure to STERILISE your equipment
    • Always use a GLASS jar as ceramic/other jars may leach unwanted nasties into your brew
    • If you suspect your SCOBY to be mouldy or unhealthy, ditch it and start again – no exceptions
    • If you have a severe health condition, always talk to an alternative health professional for personalised guidance

    Summary

Kombucha is a-mazing! It has been such a game changer for my digestive health and my overall health. Personally, I drink about 200ml of kombucha per day and that seems to work for me. There is no limit on how much you can drink per day, your body will naturally get rid of what it doesn’t require. When getting started, simply listen to your body and drink as much or as little as you feel. Making your own brew is very inexpensive, however, if you’re not feeling confident about making your own brew, buy commercial kombucha. It’s becoming increasingly popular to find them at your local grocery or health food store. Either way get some kombucha in your body, it will thank you for it!

The Ultimate Way To Detox Your Skin – Guasha

The Ultimate Way To Detox Your Skin – Guasha

    Apr 10, 2017

My introduction to guasha was at one of Tyler Tolman’s workshops in right here in Perth. He shared this ancient wisdom of how Egyptians cleansed and healed their skin using just 2 ingredients!

Now it’s common knowledge that skin is the body’s largest organ, however, I personally never really gave too much thought into what I put onto this organ. I was guilty of not knowing the ingredients of products I used on a daily basis to clean this organ and to be quite frank didn’t even think of my skin as an organ that needed to function properly. Needless to say, after the workshop I knew I had to make some changes and dug a little deeper…

After googling guasha extensively, I seem to find a whole lot of information about the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practice of guasha or scraping. To be honest the images I found looked like something out of a horror movie! It reminded me of the bruise like dots that result from cupping (another TCM practice) which is essentially toxins being pulled to the surface of the skin. I figured guasha was somewhat similar to cupping and the visual probably looked a lot worse than the actual practice. I also came across a great post about this woman’s experience with TCM guasha and how she went back for more. After using guasha for nearly 7 months now, I’m assured Tyler Tolman’s guasha is quite different from my findings on google. I now use it 3-4 times per week and absolutely LOVE it!

How to make and use Guasha?

    1. Buy the cheapest bottle of triple distiller VODKA and some aluminium free BI-CARB SODA mix the 2 in a Jar with a lid till its a putty consistency.
    2. Personally, I like to put a few drops of LEMON essential oil in my guasha as lemon is a great detoxifier and also smells delicious.
    3. You use it in the same way you use body scrubs from head to toe. Initially you may get certian spots that are particularly itchy and Tyler recommends focusing on theses spots.
    4. Rinse off and dry
    5. Lather up with coconut oil. It’s medium chain fatty acid is antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal!
    6. Tyler recommends getting out in the sun after the guasha process, personally I spend at least 10 minutes out in the sunshine everyday and don’t feel the need to do it stright after guasha. But of course, feel free to do so.

    How it Works?

“As the bicarbonate soda is highly alkaline it kills acidic bacteria that build up in the skin. The skin is seven layers of dermis and epidermis and a lot of stuff can accumulate in the skin. Fungus, yeasts, petrochemicals, parasites and moulds that can come out as rashes and infections.

A lot of times petrochemicals that happen to be in the air around us get into the skin and really block it up, resulting in pimples and irritations. When you use the bicarb soda and the vodka it opens the pores of the skin as well as alkalising everything. The guasha mix cleans absolutely everything out and allows more oxygen to enter creating beautiful fresh skin.

I recommend doing this every day for the first 1-2 weeks then 2-3 times per week indefinitely and of course in conjunction with eating well, regular cleansing and drinking lots of water and getting out in the sun.” – Tyler Tolman

    My Experience

After the first 7 days or so of using guasha my skin became incredibly dry and itchy. My skin felt like it was on fire and I felt like screaming. I knew this form me was a form of detoxification and that everything would be ok. I can assure you it was and I am grateful to have stumbled upon guasha. It is now very much apart of my life and has been so for the past 7 months.
