5 Ways to Enhance your Yoga Practice.

5 Ways to Enhance your Yoga Practice.

Oct 13, 2021
5 Ways to Enhance your Yoga Practice.

1. Empty stomach

Practice on an empty stomach – wait at least 3-4 hours after a meal before you practice.

Why?

  • After consuming food, there is a massive increase of blood flow to the digestive tract. Meaning less blood is flowing to your other organs including your brain. It’s the time to rest and digest. On an empty stomach however, the flow of blood (Prana and much more) is enhanced meaning we get much more benefit from the very same poses.
  • If your organs are full (of food) and you impose stress on them by twisting yourself into a pretzel or laying on your belly, there is a good chance you may cause some damage. Eeek.
  • We are much more alert and aware on an empty stomach and so we can practice with greater awareness.
  • Ideally your bowels and bladder should be emptied before practice too.

2. Don’t drink water

Yes, in general we all should be drinking more water but NOT during your yoga session.

Why?

  • As you practice yoga, you will notice that a certain amount of heat is generated within the system. This heat is not merely temperature but what is known as Samat Prana or Solar Heat. We want to increase the solar heat within the system as it has numerous benefits, including purification. As soon as we sip on water, this heat or fire is diminished which not only stops the purification but could increase the mucus levels in the body – making us more susceptible to colds and other excess mucus conditions.
  • After practice, you can consume warm water however it is recommended to wait at least 30 minutes before consuming anything cold.

3. Have a cold shower

I know, its winter and your thinking no freeking way! I’d encourage you to make at least the last 10 seconds of your shower cold.

Why?

  • When cold water runs over our bodies, the pores in between the skin cells open up – for yoga practitioners, this is important because we want the cellular structure of the body to be charged with a different dimension of energy.
  • Having wet hair will greatly improve your receptivity during practice. Do try it and notice how energised you feel afterwards and the difference in your practice.

4. Wear loose, light and comfortable clothing

You mean I shouldn’t wear tights? Hmmm, thats right. Opt for a harem pant or similar instead.

Why?

  • Wearing tight fitting clothing restricts the flow of Prana or Vital Energy quite literally.
  • Be sure to remove your spectacles and any other metal jewellery or watches from the body. Anything with metal in it conducts. When we practice yoga, we are directing the flow of Prana in very specific pathways. Metal on the body causes interference.
  • Light coloured clothing is also recommended as it reflects everything. Watch this video to learn more.

5. Practice ALL limbs of yoga

Keep in mind yoga is much, much more than physical postures (asanas). How you live your life is just as, if not the most important aspect of yoga.

  • To deepen your practice and understanding, Inner Engineering With Sadhguru is the cream della cream. The program happens in 2 parts and an opportunity of a lifetime.
  • The 8 limbs are Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. Keep in mind, the postures (asana) represent one out of the 8 limbs of yoga. Are you ready to incorporate the other 7?

Engineering your Insides for Wellbeing??

Engineering your Insides for Wellbeing??

Dec 20, 2018

After consuming Sadhguru’s videos on YouTube like a serial chip addict for well over a year, the time came to take things to another level.

I mean everything I heard this man say appealed to my logic and sounded like truth bomb after truth bomb. I simply couldn’t resist.  After a quick Google search, I discovered this man is by no means playing small. He has a foundation (Isha Foundation) run by volunteers and conducts programs all over the world that promotes human wellbeing. Talk about being the change! Lucky for me, there was an Inner Engineering program being conducted right here in Perth 2 weeks from the date I looked.

As there is a technology to create external wellbeing, there is a whole dimension of science and technology to create inner wellbeing.

Sadhguru

What is Inner Engineering?

I didn’t know, I thought the name was rather off putting and sounded very Indian (and I’m Indian) but what the hell…the seeker in me couldn’t resist. I registered my husband and myself for the program.

Unbeknown to me, the program was run by a trained teacher not Sadhguru himself. The first two evenings I found a little strange in relation the to the strictness and delivery. Admittedly the thought did cross my mind that this could be some kind of cult.  But, past experience has taught me that you never really know with these things until the very end. So I committed and attended.

My Experience

For me, the program was nothing short of phenomenal. I do love how the universe gives you exactly what you need at exactly the right time. It didn’t actually matter that Sadhguru wasn’t physically there, his presence permeated everything that was being offered. What this man teaches covers every aspect of life and as I have continued on my journey with the Isha Foundation and their Hatha Yoga School, I’ve come to learn that I really know nothing about anything.

During the program we were initiated into a practice called Shambavi Maha Mudra. To say WOW would be inadequate.  This isn’t a yoga session where you’ll find you super lean, flexible Lululemon tight wearing students doing impossible poses (sorry Lululemon… I do love your tights, but it ain’t suitable for yoga…another post on proper yoga wear to come). This yoga is for everybody from the nimble to the rigid and elderly. It is vast and covers so much more than asana (which is what we think yoga is in the West). The reorganisation of energies that occurs during the initiations and how the practice unfolds post course is simply beautiful.

Post Program…

I completed the Inner Engineering Total program in August 2017 and have immersed myself in the yogic science as taught by Sadhguru. The practices I have learned continues to open me up in ways that I never thought possible. Some days after my practice, I just sit there and tears of joy flow down my cheeks, my face hurts from smiling which feels like an outpouring of what’s inside (that’s just the beginning). The great sages, yogis and enlightened being of the past all said ‘know thy self. ‘ This yoga is a technology that I believe is helping me do just that. It continues to peel away all the layers and layers of bs that I have identified with and creates an internal situation in my body that is balanced, harmonious, vibrant and peaceful.

Learn More

I’ve noticed that they don’t really give you too much information about any of their programs, especially their advanced programs. My guess is so you go with an open mind instead of limiting your experience with someone else’s – that’s just my opinion. There is however a free webinar that your can register for or book available for purchase with additional information on Inner Engineering.

Register for Inner Engineering Programs

Inner Engineering Total: This comprises of 2 evening session and 2 full days on the weekend.

Inner Engineering Online & Completion: This comprise of online modules and 2 full days on the weekend where you will be initiated into Shambhavi Maha Mudra. Do ensure you finish the program by attending a Completion. The magic is in the practice you will learn in 2 full days.
